Cruising Vanuatu

We started in Port Vila which is the biggest "city" in all of Vanuatu. We spent a day provisioning and running errands. We had our sink go out on us so we stopped to pick up a new faucet for the galley an our head. Works like a dream now and no leaks! But the hot is cold and cold is hot and I found out the hard way while taking a shower haha... Good thing the water is perfect here not cold at all!
Some photos from the market:
There are a few of these little kitchen style restaurants at the market and for 500 vatu all 3 of is had fresh fish for lunch! That's about $5...:)
Taking care of little sister while dad drives the taxi bus. It's about $1.50 to take the taxi bus anywhere in town and $2 to take it out of town anywhere about 10-15 min away.
We took off to the hideaway resort and dived on the reef there which was so so pretty! Then anchored and went to the cascades or waterfalls, had some drinks and met up with Iseta for sundowners at the beach bar there. The next morning we took off to The Havannah resort on the north side of the island and dove at a couple diff spots up there and had dinner at the resort which was prolly the nicest one on the island so bossman loved it:)
While Ty n boss were diving I found this drinking the last drops of a Tuskers beer
And Ty is getting every last drop of this coconut water yummm

On our way to port sandwich to drop off supplies for the schools and hospital. We met a couple who are doing great things here and so we offered to take some parcels to the islands for them! Notepads for the schools and linens and reading glasses for the hospital...
The "yacht club" in port sandwich lol...turned out to be someone's home pretty much.
People and lots of kids hanging out and waving as we went by in the back of a transport truck.
The pigs n cows have it good here! Roaming free with no hormone injections and happy...maybe that's why they taste so damn good!!

The doctors office...
Only one thing was out of place in the village or town...big ole red digicel top up advert...it is suppose to be where you can top up your minutes on ur prepaid SIM card but they were out that day...that's also the general store you can walk up to and buy a few items.
Our transport vehicle lol...one taxi for the whole town.
There was really nothing else to do in port sandwich so we went around the corner to another bay where the dougongs hang out. They are like underwater cows of the sea...they are big beastly animals that feed off the bottom grass n whatnot...like a walrus with no tusks and a flat square nose. Cute but rare and we didn't have great visibility in this bay to see them underwater so no pics...:( this bay was so beautiful tho!! Gaspards bay is well protected and has great holding and is gorgeous with super thick jungle around it.
That tiny spec to the right is Ty and boss paddling around looking for dougongs. Trying to get a photo but these animals are super shy.
Next morning we head to the spooky black magic island with the volcanos! Ooohhh ahhhhh:) they still practice black majic here and we set up a date with the chief to have a dinner and traditional dance for us this evening. It's supposed to be just for males but maybe since it's a tourist thing they will let me watch...

OOOH spooky!!!
Those aren't clouds above the mountain. That's the volcano releasing ... Whatever volcanos release haha....
We took the dinghy up a river to see bamboo and mangroves and villagers and ran into some men building a canoe for the upcoming races. On our way back out they pulled us over and gave us coconuts...all they wanted in exchange was a photo with us funky bunch of foreigners.
The volcanic beaches have black sand instead of white.
We finally had dolphins!!!

We went to the village where they do the Rom dance in full dress for the tourists. We had to hire a guide from the village to take us up there and ask the chief if we can see the village and the dance.
Everyone had a machete! I feel like a total tourist cuz I don't have my own haha
This little piggies going to market haha!!
Our guides home.
The children always stare and giggle. Kinda wish I had some bubbles.
You get some crazy massive trees in these jungles.

This is the burial site of the sista who recently passed away...
Building a new roof. If done right they last over 15 years I think?...
The traditional Rom dance or black magic dance!
It was awesome that they did this for us on the side. The chief said no at first because of the recent death in the village. They normally wait 5 days to dance out of respect for the dead but they took a sizable donation and did it quietly on the side of the village.
With the chief!!!

Our guide also set up another guide to take us to the active volcano that is oh just about 8 miles away!! Lol yeah we hiked 16 miles roughly today and it was so worth the pain! He took us through the jungle and up to the peak where you can see the lava boiling and rolling over in the center of the crater. It was the most breathtaking thing we've ever seen!!! You can also see the red glow so bright at night in the anchorage and THAT is amazing with all the stars in view as well!! By far the coolest thing we've ever witnessed!
Drinking water from the tree branch.

The banyon trees latch on to other trees and start taking them over until they are dead and only the banyon remains. The roots grow from the branches up high down to the ground. It's quite spectacular to see how big they can get!:)
River of black sand.
At some points the ridge we walked along was no more that 6-8 inches wide with sheer drop offs on either side. Little nerve racking. Had to stay focuse on not stopping at one point cuz I started to psych myself out...
And then this...
After the 3-4 hour hike we find we could have taken the chopper! For about $1500 per person...
The rocks were cool up there too.
We took a short break and ate a snack before the hike back down.

The 6.5 hour 18 mile hike was intense and everything just hurts right now...but again so worth it!!!
With our guide after 18 miles that he did in FLIP FLOPS...

Glow of the volcano at night.

PADI divers!

We ended up getting our PADI open water diving certification while we were waiting for the boss to arrive. It was awesome!! The water here is so clear and we were able to squeeze it into a 2 day course and pass to get certified before boss gets here. Now we can dive with him everywhere!! It was an amazing experience and we loved it!!! The first day we practiced skills in shallow water like taking of masks and using each other's breathing apparatuses....taking of all the gear and putting it back on. Then we went out to a 12 meter sandy bottom with coral and we practiced out there under water and dove the reef over there. Yesterday we did 3 dives. 2 in the am around a couple of cool reefs. One was a reef wall where waves were crashing on top of the water but down below you just get pushed an pulled by this little surge just barely tugging at ya. The second one was 2 big coral heads you could swim through and around. There we saw this really cool crocodile fish that blended a little too well into the rocks....Ty almost put his hand on to steady himself while looking at a spiny worm like thing....when we were on the bottom I managed to hit my knee on a giant sea cucumber and it squirted all this white sticky stringy stuff at me!!! Yes everyone laughed at me because I found an underwater lover LOL!!! Anyway it took a while to get it off my wetsuit but it's clean now:)

We took the final exams and passed and went for a 3rd dive on a wreck!!! It was the deepest dive we can do at 18 meters down. It was a little intense I thought just because you don't see anything until you descend and then this ship mast covered in coral comes into view! Then we went around the ship and checked everything out and it was a little murky I think with the tide change so visibility wasn't that great but the ship was awesome to see. Then ascended and did one more exercise using a compass and bearing and then she said we passed!!!!!! Celebrated with some tea and cake!
Passed!!
Our Australian friend and fellow diver Iseta jumping in.
She was on another cat in New Caledonia...that's where we met...and once they arrived to Vanuatu she decided to stick around and get her dive masters!!  Dive masters is a long course kinda like how we got our yachtmasters. It's kind of a big deal;)

World Arc 2014

They're heeeerrre...:) bunch of sailboats pulled in yesterday and today. The arc is a bunch of boats that sail around the world together and right now they are here in Vanuatu. It's a very fast paced world tour that only spends a few days in each place but they hit up all the best places and it's like sailing with a huge family. Everyone knows everyone and they all hang out together. I think it would be so fun to sail with a huge group!!
One of our happy hours at the brewery. They have the best pizza!
They pulled in a backed up just in front of our table at dinner tonight.
Another one here at the waterfront bar
All these boats just got here. This dock was empty just a couple days ago.

This is what a typical yacht club looks like in case you're wondering. The bar is quite packed but still too early for dinner. So we've just been wrapping up last minute boat projects before bossman gets here. Fixing leaks and cleanin bilges n such...we had a few beers explode on us this batch...tragic...just hangin. Making friends. Exploring. Getting excited about visits!!!

Passage from New Caledonia to Vanuatu

We checked out of new cal yesterday after picking up our starter and filled all the tanks. We traveled east for about 7 hours motoring the whole way with 0 wind. That's a good thing btw because the trades are usually pumpin at about 20kts on the nose... We had a minor setback and left about an hour later than planned which put us at the anchorage in pitch black night mode...good thing new cal has reliable charts! We anchored overnight at out jump off point which is just around the point to head north to Vanuatu. The anchorage itself was awesome! There was so much bioluminescence it was unreal! Motoring back to set the anchor the chain lit up neon green in the water and the prop wash from going in reverse lit up the bottom of the boat like Christmas! After we settled you could stand on the back of the boat and look in to see the green dots glowing 3 feet down. Ty said it seemed like the boat was floating...(above water lol)....it turned out to be a really pretty spot with tall sides in red clay and green trees...
Sunset the night before
How's this for a new concept haha
On the right is our new sail and the left is our old genoa. We rigged it up to help us fly downwind when wind is too strong for spinnaker:)
The wind had been all over and up and down so we are now just flying the genoa and the swell is pushing us right along. We should be in port Vila before noon on Thursday. Btw seasickness and malaria pills DO NOT work well together!!!:(

So we made it in to Vanuatu a couple days ago and it feels sooo good to be back in the island life. Away from big city civilization. We have roosters crowing again and the people here are soooo nice...very similar to tonga I think. We went to go pay immigration and found these people trading chickens out of a box! Live chickens
This guy was walking around with a lizard and he let me hold it
Then he told me he charges 5 bucks for pics.....I gave him $1..... Get a bigger lizard buddy!

There was a big cruise ship that pulled up the day we got here so the streets were packed and crazy. We went to pay customs and got a close up of the ship from the dinghy
If you like burgers n fries you are in luck here because that's the cheapest thing on the menu and probably the best too. It's one of the best burgers he's ever had!
Aaaand we treated ourselves to a few Tuskers for working so hard to get here
Our anchorage in port Vila. Off to the market today to see what produce they have....
